13 Shot Dead During a Class on Citizenship

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/04/nyregion/04hostage.html?ref=todayspaper

During a citizen class just this past Friday, a gunman shot and killed 13 people, wounded 4 and then killed himself at a Citizen class in Binghamton, New York this past Friday.

The gunman, Jiverly Wong, 42, was a Vietnamese immigrant who lived in Johnson City, New York. Police are not sure why Wong committed this violent act but they do know it was pre-meditated. Wong attended the classes which were there to help and guide immigrants.

I really don't understant people who do things such as this... If they are so miserable they want to kill themselves then that is there business. Why kill other innocent people?? It doesn't make sense and it really makes me angry. Even if they are mad at the people at the center, why kill innocent people that may have been in there... I just wonder when or if violence will ever end.

It was really depressing to read about the stories of the families who lost loved ones... I hope that someday people will stop committing such violent acts of hatred, but maybe I'm the one whose crazy?

Nurse Is Charged in the Death of 5 Patients...

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/03/us/03nurse.html?_r=1&ref=health

This article really bothers me, because I just don't get how people can be so cruel. Not only was she charged with poisoning 5 people with bleach at a clinic in Lufkin, Texas, she even poisoned 3 people in one day and made a total of 5 different patients sick!

If she is convicted of all of this, the nurse Kimberly Saenz, 35, will face the death penalty. Which is something that I really don't agree with. Yes, Saenz did a terrible thing and I believe she should be in jail and remain there for the rest of her life without parole. Why kill her? It makes no sense to me and I think it's very prehestoric of our country. We are basically killing people because they have killed people... does that make sense? It just sends mixed messages when I think that to make her suffer in jail would be much more harmful to her then just being put to death. After being convicted and facing jail Saenz will most likely wish she was dead.

Overall, this article was informative but disturbing. I don't understand why the death penalty is still around and why Saenz would kill innocent people in recovery.

What is happening to Ireland?

http://egan.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/01/the-orphans-of-ireland/?ref=opinion

I personally think it's really sad that Ireland has made such a change. A country so historic and beloved should stay as that I think. I would hate to see it become another United States.

Not that I don't love the country I live in, it's just that an old European country such as Ireland I picture to be so rural and beautiful... to go there and see mc- mansions and cul de sacs would be very disappointing. Also hearing that they look to Obama as their president is a little bit strange, can you say mini- America?

Back to my point however, I agree with the author Timothy Egan. What was Ireland thinking?
